Poppy: Becoming a SCITT trainee

The beginning of September this year brought with it some of the most intense nerves I have ever experienced. Having applied for the SCITT course rather late on in the last academic year, (rather late as in…the last week of summer term!), I felt wonderfully unprepared walking into school for the first inset day. Anxious as to whether I’d fit in with my colleagues in the department, if the kids would like me, and if I would ever get used to being addressed solely by ‘Miss’.

Once I applied for the LTSA SCITT course, and was lucky enough to get a trainee place, I ensured that I had some observation time in the chosen school. This was so important for me and ensured that I had met many of the team prior to September. I felt so welcomed on those observation days and a part of the school.

As part of our Topic this term the children are learning about Rainforests. Therefore, as part of their English lessons this week and last the children created a new species from the rainforest, planned, edited and then wrote up their newspaper report about the discovery of the new species.

It seems strange writing a blog about my experience so far on my SCITT course. How can I write about something that I only started 3 weeks ago? Strangely I think I could actually write a book as I have already experienced so much and I have had such a positive experience.

My year on the LTSA SCITT, has been the most challenging year I have had so far, but by far the most rewarding! Having worked as an instructor in a special school, for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, for two years before beginning my training year - I found myself in a slightly different position initially to other trainees. However, LTSA have been very accommodating and understanding of my background and I have felt supported throughout.
